Achieving A New Life

Through CHRISTUS Learning Center, students like Yeffry are building new futures—one step at a time.

Yeffry was born in Honduras, where he completed school through the 8th grade. In 2021, he came to the United States determined to work hard and support himself. Like many adult learners, he balanced long hours at a full‑time job while searching for a way to continue his education.

In 2023, Yeffry began English as a Second Language classes at the Learning Center. “His progress was remarkable,” said Norma Vargas, Learning Center ESL instructor. By 2024, he advanced to Adult Basic Education and then into GED classes with instructor Yolanda Hunt.

In November 2025, Yeffry reached a major milestone. “He earned his GED, taking every test in English,” said Hunt. “This achievement opened doors he once thought were out of reach.”

When Yeffry received his GED certificate, he came straight to the Learning Center to share the moment with the team who supported him along the way. Today, Yeffry is looking to continue his education at Houston City College and secure a well‑paying job so he can better support his family.
