Back On His Feet
In need of a fresh start and the desire to reconnect with family, Kevin* relocated to Texas in early 2024. After a couple of months, he realized that living with family was not working out and sought shelter at the Salvation Army in Galveston. The staff at the Salvation Army recommended that Kevin go to CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread for meals and assistance.
Upon arriving at Our Daily Bread, Kevin met with Client Navigator Johnathen Vallery and established two goals – employment and housing. Kevin regularly met with Johnathen and shared updates about his job search. He continued to follow the program, but still was unable to secure a job.
Although things were not going as planned, Kevin was determined to continue his journey until he received a call that changed his life. “Kevin’s step-father, who raised him, was gravely ill and did not have long to live,” said Vallery. “His family invited him to return home to be with his dying parent and promised to help him get back on his feet.”
Since he was unable to secure work in Galveston, Kevin decided returning home was the best thing for him. The only problem was his family did not have the funds for his trip. Unsure of how he would get home, Kevin spoke with Vallery and asked if Our Daily Bread could assist with his trip. “After confirming his story, I contacted our community partner, St. Vincent de Paul, who purchased a bus ticket to Missouri,” said Vallery. “The partnerships we have in Galveston, like St. Vincent de Paul, are so beneficial to helping our clients build hope-filled lives. I am glad to know that Kevin will have the support of his family in Missouri to make sure he achieves his goals.”
