But I Don’t Feel Bad
June is Men’s Health Month with the emphasis put on educating men about the importance of managing their health. When there is no health insurance, there is often one more reason to delay a routine visit. This is a familiar story at CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic.
“When men finally walk through the door for a preventive checkup, the results can be surprising,” said Sr. Rosanne Popp, M.D., medical director of St. Mary’s Clinic. “Physical exams and lab work often uncover silent conditions—problems that don’t cause pain today but can seriously affect quality of life tomorrow if left untreated. Patients are often surprised when the results show high cholesterol or diabetes and respond that they don’t feel sick.”
José’s story is a powerful example. In his early forties, José* felt healthy and strong. “It was his spouse who finally convinced him to come in for a checkup,” said Popp. “When his lab results came back, José had dangerously high cholesterol and severely uncontrolled diabetes. Treatment would require multiple medications, including insulin.”
His first concern wasn’t just his diagnosis, but how he would afford the care he needed. José met the nutritionist, who created a diet plan that fit his life and demanding construction job. She enrolled him in the Food Assistance Program so his family could access free, nutritious food on a regular basis. Next, a registered nurse taught José how to safely monitor his blood sugar and administer insulin. He received diabetic testing supplies and a three-month supply of diabetes and cholesterol medications through the clinic’s medication assistance program.
“When José returned for follow-up labs, the results told a new story,” said Popp. “His blood sugar and cholesterol levels had improved significantly. He felt stronger, more confident and relieved. We were happy to provide this personal care.”
