Giving Back This Season

Tis the season to give, and CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic and CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread have been on the giving and receiving end recently.  Annually, associates from CHRISTUS Health TLRA Houston, CHRISTUS Physicians Group and the Foundation raise funds to pull together bags of food for the CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic and CHRISTUS Point of Light Clinic clients who are struggling to put a Thanksgiving meal on the table.

Sixty-four clients received reusable bags filled with fruit and a $100 gift card to Walmart or HEB to purchase items for their Thanksgiving meals. Pictured to the right, St. Mary’s Clinic Nutritionist Jocelyn Branas is seen presenting a bag to one of this year’s beneficiaries. “The annual Thanksgiving drive provides a great opportunity for our area associates to participate and meet the needs of those who need it most during the holiday season,” Jeannette Baughman, Director of Programs for CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, said. This year marked the highest number of bags ever distributed, due to the high need as a result of COVID and job loss. Many families also lost their main provider due to illness and death from COVID.

CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread was on the receiving end of a generous donation drive by Emily Burnside (pictured to the right) and Julianna Poulson from Frisco, Texas. Both high school seniors, Emily and Julianna worked in collaboration with the non-profit organization “Her Drive.” The two coordinated with local businesses and corporate offices to house donation boxes on their premises.

They collected beauty, first aid and self-care items, clothing and cleaning products for CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread. “The Frisco ‘bubble’ is extremely sheltered, and topics such as homelessness and period poverty are often not talked about,” Emily said. “We wanted to bring this conversation to Frisco to not only garner donations, but also start the conversation about how our community needs to be doing more to address these problems.”
