Plating Up Good Health

For those suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes, there is no quick fix in controlling these diseases. It is often a multi-pronged approach including medication, exercise and nutrition.

At CHRISTUS Point of Light Clinic, nutritionist educator Denise Reyna guides patients on restoring their health through general nutrition education, a calorie-based diet and exercise suggestions aligned with their physical abilities.

Patients are followed up with monthly to evaluate their progress. “For my patients with diabetes, I want to encourage them that it’s important to control their A1C to prevent any other issues with their health, such as organ damage,” Reyna said.

She focuses on the MyPlate method, but also provides a portion control handout that demonstrates measuring portions with a hand. “This guide is great for eating out, where it can be hard to gage a portion size,” Reyna said. “I also explain to them how many portions they are allowed per meal.”

In addition, reinforcing consistency with medications is key. “Even though their A1C has lowered with treatment, they need to continue taking their medications to maintain it,” Reyna said. Reyna finds fulfillment in helping patients change their lifestyles. “I appreciate patients who are invested in controlling their conditions and are willing to work hard. I feel like these are the success stories.”
