Rising To The Call
As of May 2025, a total of 1,024 confirmed measles cases were reported by 31 states. With the spread of measles, CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinics is stepping in to ensure that area students are vaccinated against this virus and many more.
Due to recent federal funding cuts, the Houston Health Department called and requested the Mobile Clinics help with vaccinating students in HISD’s West Division. “This area is the most populated and least vaccinated, and unfortunately suffered two deaths of unvaccinated school aged children,” said Nancy Bocanegra, Healthy Living Mobile Clinics Program supervisor. The program was already working with Galena Park ISD, Aldine ISD, Baytown ISD, Spring ISD, and YES Prep, KIPP and other charter schools to provide vaccinations to their students.
“We answered the call and started with the most deficient schools with lowest percentage of vaccination rates. We are trying to get as many kids vaccinated before the summer break,” said Bocanegra.
For schools like Las Americas Middle School and Cobb Six Grade Campus School, the Mobile Clinics have made a real impact this spring. “At Las Americas, the vaccination rate went from 39% to 98%, and at Cobb, 89% of the sixth-grade students will be caught up with required vaccinations and ready for seventh grade. By everyone working together, we can make a difference and keep our communities healthy.”
