Road to Recovery

When a call for help comes, CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread’s Johnathen Vallery is always ready to assist, even if it’s closing time.

One Friday at the end of business, a man came in asking for help to get sober. Vallery made several calls to different rehab centers. “I was hoping to find one that had availability and would accept the client, not only on such short notice, but also under the influence,” said Vallery, Our Daily Bread’s supervisor.

On his final call, he contacted The Wheelhouse in Pasadena. “They had a spot immediately, however I was concerned about his level of intoxication,” said Vallery.  “Thankfully, the Wheelhouse representative said it was best if the client could come in while he was still under the influence, so they could evaluate him to provide a detox plan.”

He provided The Wheelhouse with the client’s information, called him an Uber to take him to the facility and took care of the trip charge.  “Even in his intoxicated state, the client was very thankful for the opportunity to get the help he truly needed,” said Vallery.  “I followed up with the Wheelhouse the following week, and the client was on the road to recovery.”
