Matthew Minson, M.D. discussed his critically acclaimed, award nominated, new book, Prepare to Defend Yourself: How to Navigate the Healthcare System and Escape with Your Life. He will talk about the inspiration for the book, which sold out its first print run in four months, and what its success says about the current state of health care, how to engage the public, and the role humor in all this. Following the discussion, he will be available to sign copies.

Dr. Minson’s book explores important health topics that everyone should understand including:

  • What’s the difference between a nurse practitioner, a physician’s assistant, a physician, and a paramedic?
  • Can any hospitals treat your stroke, heart attack, or trauma with equal speed and effectiveness?
  • Should you negotiate and appeal a hospital charge?

Dr. Minson is a clinician, inventor and writer in the School of Health Policy and Management, at the School of Public Health, Texas A&M University Health Science Center. He is also the Sr. Advisor for Health Affairs at the Texas Engineering Extension Service and the Medical Director for Texas Task Force One, the FEMA/State of Texas Urban Search and Rescue Team. He is currently at work on the follow up, Prepare to Defend Yourself: How to Age Gracefully and Escape with Your Dignity, expected 2015. He and his wife, Kelli, live in Houston where they attend to the needs of their two Labradoodles.
