CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare Hosts 15th Annual Spring Luncheon
Event raises $252,585 to support Foundation’s mission to bring healthcare services to under-served communities.
HOUSTON (March 29, 2019) — CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare hosted its 15th annual Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, March 26. The yearly event honors community leaders and raises funds for CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare’s healthcare programs. This year’s luncheon raised funds for CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread in Galveston Texas.
The Foundation proudly honored Steve and Vicki Smith with the Legacy Award, an award given to recognize and honor those who have demonstrated commitment to continue the legacy of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word by promoting health and welfare to people in need.
“We are thrilled to honor Vicki and Steve Smith for their gracious support of our work and to the community” said Richard R. Torres, President of CHRISTUS Foundation For HealthCare. “They are great ambassadors of what we do to provide critical assistance to those in need. We are very appreciative of our committed donors, community partners, Board of Directors and dedicated staff which allow us to provide for thousands of our neighbors who have nowhere else to go.”
The Smiths, who have been married for more than 50 years, are members of St. Michael Catholic Church where Steve is a lay lector as well as having served on the Pastoral Advisory Council. Vicki is a Eucharistic minister. Vicki, who converted to Catholicism in 2012, supported Steve throughout his career and gave back to her community as an active volunteer and a special education teacher.
A premiere news anchor on both KPRC and KHOU until his retirement in 1999, Steve’s coverage of the news and his commentary kept the City of Houston and Southeast Texas in touch with the world. The Smiths remain active in the community, contributing their time and talents to numerous charitable and arts groups in the Houston-Galveston area.
The 15th annual Spring Luncheon also welcomed special guest, entrepreneur, international best-selling author and award winning film producer, Chris Gardner. Gardner is also the inspiration for the critically acclaimed film “The Pursuit of HappYness” for which Will Smith received the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Academy Award nominations for
his performance.
Houston’s own Steve Smith emceed the ceremonies.
