A New Path
For over 30 years, CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread has provided health and social services to Galveston’s homeless. Five days a week, clients can depend on two hot meals, medical assistance, access to psychological services, clothing and hygiene products. For former client Marci Johnson, the services at CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread have set her on a new path.
Johnson found herself homeless due to a medication that affected her mental state. She went to the Salvation Army which then directed her to CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread. “The experience with Ms. Angela and Ms. Holly was absolutely wonderful,” Johnson said. Together, Angela Joseph, Director of Our Daily Bread, and Holly Pryor, a Krist Samaritan counselor, were able to attend to Johnson’s physical and mental needs. “They have helped me tremendously,” Johnson said. Working together, Johnson now has an apartment and has applied for food stamps.
For Joseph, it is energizing seeing clients put their lives back together. “Seeing them set a goal and work towards accomplishing it, lets me know the work we do is necessary. That is truly rewarding.”
During her time homeless, Johnson received support from her fellow homeless. Now that she is stable, she is reaching out to those still struggling at Our Daily Bread. “I’m trying to help the homeless, because the homeless helped me.”
