Mission Accomplished

For CHRISTUS Learning Center student Rosa Garcia, her journey continues.

Originally from Honduras, Garcia came to the States in 1999 and began a family. On and off for 17 years, she tried to pursue her GED. She began with the ESL class at the Learning Center to strengthen her English and then signed up for the GED class. Math and language were her most challenging areas. “We did a lot of practice tests, so I knew what areas to focus on,” said Garcia.

After two years of GED classes, she officially passed the GED test last year.  “It was exciting. Mission accomplished,” Garcia said.

She is now taking advantage of the Learning Center’s computer classes. Offered in partnership with the City of Houston, the classes utilize the Northstar Digital Literacy curriculum. The platform teaches everything from the basics of using a computer to the mastery of various computer programs.

“I’m learning everything through my computer classes. It’s exciting to see all the things we can do through the computer,” said Garcia. “I was just working on a PowerPoint. I am loving what I am learning through the classes.”

The GED and the computer classes are the stepping stones for Garcia to future employment. She has her sights set on working in education. “I would like to work with children, especially those with special needs.”
