Nun Run Raises $83,000 for Underserved Children
The 14th Annual Nun Run, presented by USFHP, coordinated by The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of Houston and the CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, helped raise $83,000 for underserved children in the Houston area.
The event was held on Saturday October 13th, 2018. The charitable ride started at the Villa De Matel Convent and ended in San Leon, TX.
More than 160 motorcycles and 239 participants gathered at 9 a.m. on the Villa De Matel Convent grounds, until kick stands up at 10:30 a.m.
Before rubber met the road, motorcyclists, riders, community members and nuns were in for a treat. Event attractions included several raffles and a bubble station for kids. To participants’ surprise there was a special guest appearance by Houston’s own Mattress Mack, Mr. Jim McIngvale.
McIngvale co-emceed the event with Sr. Rosanne Popp, M.D., drawing prize winners from buckets filled with raffle receipts. In true Mattress Mack fashion, the Houston Philanthropist offered 10 tickets to the Houston Astros vs. Boston Red Socks American League Championship Series (ALCS).
That wasn’t the only wild card up McIngvale’s sleeves. Following several raffle drawings he went head to head with Sr. Rosanne Popp M.D. in a scooter race to raise more money for the noble cause.
The otherwise silent Saturday morning at the convent housed the growl of cruisers, tourers, trikes and slingshots. Shortly before 10:30 a.m., the Blue Knights led the rumbling riders from the convent’s steel gates to their 40 mile ride.
Forty-five minutes later, the motorcyclists arrived at their destination at Topwater Grill. All participants enjoyed a delicious meal. After the remaining raffle item winners were announced their kickstands came up as they drove into the afternoon sun.
