Providing A Healthy New Start For Victims Of Abuse
For over 40 years, Fort Bend Women’s Center has provided healing and hope to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Greater Houston area. Recently CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinics visited the shelter to provide preventative health screenings to its clients.
One client stood out during their screenings, as she had extremely high blood sugar levels. “Our nurse Karina Reyna stressed the importance of getting a diabetes diagnosis and medication,” Nancy Bocanegra, Mobile Clinics Supervisor, said.
The client then informed Karina that she was taking medication for diabetes but was out of her medication and did not have the means to get a refill. “Her numbers were alarming, and I knew all she needed was a plan,” Reyna said.
Since the woman was currently residing at the Center, Reyna reached out to the nurse on staff there and made her aware of the client’s condition. “She was referred to San Jose Clinic’s Fort Bend location for follow-up. The Center was able to offer free transportation to and from the clinic and help to get her refills,” Bocanegra said.
Reyna was able to find additional resources for the client to manager her healthcare. “Administering health screenings to patients isn’t just about telling patients what they need to work on, but also giving them the tools to get the help they need.”
