Step By Step
In April 2025, Brian* walked through the doors of CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread carrying the weight of a life that had changed overnight. He had recently lost his leg, and with it, the sense of stability he once knew.
“He was able to secure a bed at the Salvation Army, which gave him a place to sleep, but the services he needed extended way beyond a bed,” said Johnathen Vallery, case manager at CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread.
Together with Vallery, Brian applied for housing through the Galveston Housing Authority. Community partners stepped in with one of them helping him receive a prosthetic leg that would eventually give him back his independence. “When the prosthetic finally arrived, Brian became optimistic for his new future,” said Vallery. “While there were days of discourgement as he learned to walk with his protestic and as he waited to hear from the Galveston Housing Authority, I had to remind him of the progress he was making, even if it was little by little.”
Then in March 2026, his application for housing was finally approved. Brian received the keys to a high-rise apartment overlooking Galveston. “Brian’s story is one of resilience, community and taking life one step at a time,” said Vallery.
