UTMB Students Visit CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread
University of Texas Medical Branch Medical (UTMB) students enrolled in the School of Medicine and Masters of Public Health programs visited and toured the CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread facility, located at 2420 Winnie St. Galveston, Texas, as part of a 4-week long class called “Topics of Public Health.”
The class was designed to introduce students to public health programs in the Houston-Galveston community.
Leslie Stalnaker, Coordinator of the Public Health Graduate Program reached out to CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare after several students expressed an interest in finding out more about health programs for the homeless population.
“As a part of the class we introduce students to health programs in our community that assist the population without access to hospital services as well as the ability to pay out of pocket to meet their medical needs,” said Stalnaker.
Angela Joseph, the Interim Manager of Our Daily Bread led the students on a tour of the facility.
“I’m delighted the students were interested in the plight of the homeless and chose to visit our facility to gain first-hand knowledge about our services and the scores of people we see daily,” said Joseph.
The tour began in the main area, going through the kitchen and other parts of the facility before Joseph gave a short talk on the services provided to the homeless population, the challenges and some of CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread’s many success stories. Sister Ricca Dimalibot, M.D., Director and Physician of the CHRISTUS Point of Light Clinic led the discussion.
