For 37 years, Our Daily Bread has offered Galveston’s homeless an opportunity for a new path away from the streets.

Our story on the Island goes back to 1866 when the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the founding order for Our Daily Bread, began their work with the sick and infirm in Galveston. Eventually branching out to Houston to address the healthcare needs there, they continued their presence on the island with St. Mary’s Hospital and eventually CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread in 1986.

For 37 years, Our Daily Bread has offered Galveston’s homeless an opportunity for a new path away from the streets. In some cases, a simple thing such as the loss of a job contributed to a client’s homelessness. The Our Daily Bread team is there to lift them up with finding new, affordable housing and options for support as they search for a new job. Some of our clients are veterans who have access to benefits but have lost the documentation necessary to access them. Our Daily Bread not only helps them access their benefits, but also serves as a secure delivery address for vital documents and correspondence. In today’s economic times, many individuals are just one paycheck away from homelessness. In the case of some homeless, it is a long road to recovery and to a life off the streets.

Our Daily Bread is truly a community effort – between the 40-plus volunteers who help monthly in food service and more to the food and supply donations given to the program from area restaurants and vendors.

As we plan for the future of Our Daily Bread, your support is critical. Join us as we change the face of homelessness in Galveston.
